While being a native of Portland, Oregon and a citizen of the world, Nicolas has traveled extensively in Greece, Ireland, Nepal and across the United States, earning his way with his music. His formal training in music is from Whitman College in Walla Walla, the Berklee School of Music in Boston, and Portland State University’s Recording Arts and Music Production program under the tutelage of Jon Newton. Mostly, however, he has learned by constant playing, listening, and experimenting.
Besides having played the guitar for 18 years, Nicolas also plays mandolin, fiddle, dobro, banjo, and bass. He has performed widely in the Northwest, both as a solo instrumentalist and as a member of various duets, trios, and bands. As a composer, he has scored the music for several documentaries, one of which has had nationwide distribution.
Nicolas has been teaching music for 12 years. He teaches all genres to all ages and all levels. Besides being very knowledgeable about music in general and stringed instruments in particular, Nicolas has a knack for making music lesson fun and catering to the individual needs and interests of his student.
